Seminole County Major Bodies of Water

This page will share some of the information on the different bodies of water in Seminole County and what you need to know before buying a waterfront home.

Included is information on the following: Lake Brantley, Lake Harney, Lake Harney, Lake Jessup, Lake Monroe, Lake Mary, Lake Orienta, Lake Howell, Bear Lake, Lake Bear Gully and the St. John’s River.

Lake Brantley, Longwood

Size/Depth (Mean/Max): 288.25 acres, (12/28 feet)
Public Access: None
Activities Available/Allowed: Waterskiing, Personal Watercraft, Fishing, Kayaking, Canoeing and more!
Homes/Subdivisions:  There are several subdivisions that have frontage on Lake Brantley or have community access. 

  • Sweetwater Oaks and Sweetwater Club have a private gated boat ramp and other amenities such as tennis, party room, picnic area and more at “Sweetwater Beach”
  • Sweetwater Springs is a gated community that has a community park, tennis, and lake access
  • Lake Brantley Club has tennis courts and a community boat ramp
  • Jennifer Estates has a boat ramp, dock and fishing pier
  • Lake Brantley Isles
  • Shadowbay has both single family homes and attached homes.  They have a private beach, community pool and tennis courts with Lake Brantley access and a boat ramp.
  • Brantley Hall Estates has many homes that are on direct canals to the lake.
  • Also, Cutler Cove, Brantley Cove, Meredith Manor/Nob Hill, Sweetwater Island, Tranquility on Lake Brantley, Lloyds Terrace, Brantley Shores

Lake Harney, Geneva 

Size/Depth (Mean/Max): 7,935 acres, (7/15 feet)
Public Access: Yes, located off SR 46 that allows access to Lake Harney.  Follow the St. Johns River north to the lake entrance.

  • Lake Harney Estates has many parcels of 5 acres or more with lake frontage and access

Lake Jessup, Sanford, Oviedo, Winter Springs

Public Access: Yes, many located around lake including:

Activities Available/Allowed: fishing, boating, air boats

Homes/Subdivisions:

  • St Johns Landing is a gated community
  • Parkstone is a gated community that features a fishing pier, trails, community pool and more
  • Lake Jessup Heights has a deeded boat slip

Lake Monroe: Sanford (Lake Monroe lies within the St Johns River)

Bear Lake, Apopka

St. John’s River

Size/Depth: is the longest river in the U.S. state of Florida, stretching 310 miles from Indian River County to the Atlantic Ocean in Duval County.  It was designated as one of the American Heritage Rivers in 1997.  Also, the Saint Johns is north-flowing, which is somewhat unusual among U.S. rivers.

Activities Available/Allowed:  The Wekiva is known for it’s canoing and kayaking.  You can get on the Wekiva in a motor boat or personal watercraft from it’s mouth on the St. Johns River, but depending on the water level you might not make it too far in!  Great fishing and look carefully, you’ll probably spot some wildlife!
